I have a window office on the eight floor of a building in the Texas Medical Center. I have to assume that in a couple of days I’ll have a windowless office on the eight floor of a building in the Texas Medical Center.
We’re packing up essential papers and storing them away, backing up harddrives, stacking computers on chairs, covering them with trash bags, and wheeling them into hallways. The only meetings not being canceled are the ones focused on the present emergency.
I’ll be taking my laptop home. It will be safer there and if I lose my office I might be able to get some work done elsewhere.
I’m off soon to assist friends from the UK and Canada who have no idea what they’re up against. Almost everyone in, and near, Houston is totally focused on preparing for this storm today and it’s only going to get crazier on Thursday and Friday.
It’s hard to believe that just a couple of weeks ago we were assisting the victims of Katrina yet this weekend we could share their fate.
Update:
I’m in from work. The four mile drive from the office took about an hour. It’s pretty crazy out there. Houston is experiencing a hell of a lot of gridlock. Almost everyone is on the road perparing for the storm or evacuating in advance of its arrival. One gas station I passed had multiple lines of cars spilling out onto the roads surrounding it. Thursday should be a mess.
