Day 1 Updates

Press conferences this morning should reveal quite a bit more about this story:

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is scheduled to answer reporters’ questions about the case at 10:30 a.m. ET, and later Friday, FBI Director Robert Mueller is expected to make remarks on homegrown terrorism.

CNN has revealed that the alleged plotters were looking for an impact that would eclipse 9/11:

A federal indictment against seven men revealed Friday details of what the government said was a plan intended to “kill all the devils we can.”

The mission was intended to be “as good or greater than 9/11,” beginning with the destruction of Chicago’s Sears Tower, according to court documents obtained Friday by CNN.

I’m going to grab some coffee and then start looking into news that broke overnight. I’ll be liveblogging the press conferences and other developments all day.

We should hear from the Attorney General any minute now. See the live video link below.

Men are charged with supporting al-Qaeda, conspiracy to wage war against the United States, conspiracy to destroy buildings, related counts. al-Qaeda named – oath of allegiance taken. You can read the indictment (PDF).

Initial questions at the Gonzales conference are asinine. As if the government should have waited until the men had a bomb-laden semi parked outside the Sears Tower before moving in or shrugged them off as hapless wannabes. And if they had succeeded the press would be out for blood. Why didn’t you take them down immediately!?

I’m rounding up some of the priceless reactions from the Left-wing of the blogosphere. Links are listed below.

Chicago and Miami press conferences coming up…

Miami’s NBC6 has live video of the R. Alexander Acosta press conference in Miami.

Joy-Ann Reid finds me to be a “nutcase” while the Miami 7 are just some harmless “militant brothas”:

Guys. Take a deep breath. Liberty City is not Peshwar. It’s the hood, man. These are probably some militant brothas working out and doing marshal arts and fancying themseelves revolutionaries. The idea that they had a serious plot going, or that they had any conceivable ties — familial or otherwise — to actual terrorists, is laughable.

Jeff Goldstein comments.

Captain Ed on today’s press conferences:

These press conferences didn’t expand our knowledge to any great extent; the big news today is the indictment itself.

Agreed. I had most of this information up last night.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reaction: Islam? Terrorism? Wha..?

Couldn’t they find something better to do in Miami?:

There has to be something fundamentally wrong with these ol boys if they couldn’t find something to do in Thongville better than blowing shit up. Could it be that all of the debauchery in Miami drove them crazy? Last time Jack was in South Beach he had nothing but pleasant thoughts.

Radical Islam is not known for it’s appreciation of thongery. The world would be a much safer place if they suddenly became fascinated with “Girls Gone Wild” DVDs but don’t hold your breath Jack.

FBI Director Robert Mueller is speaking on domestic terrorism in Cleveland. This speech was scheduled before the news in Miami broke but it’s bound to come up.

Right Truth comments on the media:

The press doesn’t seem to understand that we are trying to PREVENT terror acts here in the USA. They seem disappointed that the 7 arrested yesterday in Miami had not actually COMMITTED any acts of terror. Well, that’s the whole point folks. These guys WANTED to commit acts of terror. They were making PLANS to commit those acts. They were searching out the MEANS to obtain more money, more weapons, bomb instructions and components. They had contacts at the Sears Tower and other sites that knew the layout of the potential targets.

Yet the press is upset because there is no proof they would actually have CARRIED OUT any of these plans. What? They want the FBI, Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies to wait until something blows up before any arrests are made! The press is not the only one making these stupid comments. Some pundits on news shows are referring to these 7 terrorists as ‘too stupid’ to have carried out any acts of terror.

Maybe this will help them sort everything out.

Indictment Released: Suspects Swore AQ Oath

To say these guys are ‘professionals’ would indeed be too much. Just like in The Netherlands, these guys clearly were ‘amateurs’. Thank God.
I must not think about what they possibly could have done if they contacted a real AQ member.

Dhimmitude from the press on 7 Miami terrorists

The press doesn’t seem to understand that we are trying to PREVENT terror acts here in the USA. They seem disappointed that the 7 arrested yesterday in Miami had not actually COMMITTED any acts of terror. Well, that’s the whole

    I only have questions:

    1. What are the beliefs of the Seas of David?
It certainly was not a militant muslem organization as reported in the press.
    2. Was the Seas of David organization involved or were these seven people acting independently of the organization? Note that none of the other members were arrested. Why not?
    3. The only al Qaeda connection is the FBI plant posing as a member of al Qaeda. Where the arrested persons just trying to get some money from the al Qaeda but had no intention of accually committing the deeds? Note that they told the FBI informant that there was delay in their operations and appearently not taken any further action. They seem to have only gotten a new pair of boots from the FBI.
    4. Since this was not an al Qaeda operation, and not a major bust of a terrorist cell run by the Seas of David, nor was there at any time a danger to any structure or organization, why was there a two day news briefing by major players in the Bush administation? Note that there may be hundreds of such individuals talking and planing simillor actions every day and could be arrested at any time. Should we expect a major news conference each time an arrest is made?

    Answers please.
