There’s no solid news on what’s going down but it doesn’t sound good:
Heavy fighting has broke out on 5:00 am local time around Hoosh neighborhood in Mogadishu Dherkinley district after Islamic Courts militias attacked positions controlled by rival militias loyal to Hesein Aideed, Somali interior minister. The fighting followed days of increasing tensions around some areas in southern Mogadishu where militias against the Islamists had checkpoints.
The casualties are not yet clear since the fighting still continues intensifying around new positions in the road that links Mogadishu to Southern regions, but health sources confirmed at least sixteen people have been wounded this morning.
More from the BBC. The Islamists are on the move:
The Islamists, who control most of the south of the country, are trying to take an area in the city’s south that is controlled by warlord Abdi Qeybdid.Eyewitnesses spoke of heavy casualties with at least seven people reported killed on Monday.
The fresh violence comes a day after clashes in which at least 21 people died and some 40 were injured.
Abdi Qeybdid is the last of the warlords defeated by the Islamists still in Mogadishu.
Mogadishu resident Mohammed Abdirahman told the BBC News website: “I’ve seen people wounded and dead and the fighting is going on very hard.
“I can hear artillery and guns. It’s terrible. People are gathering in one place to find out the news.”
