U.N. Ambassador John Bolton to Resign

I’m afraid that Blogging for Bolton isn’t going to work. Ambassador Bolton won’t even get a shot at confirmation:

Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires within weeks, the White House said Monday.

Bolton’s nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans. Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a moderate Republican who lost in the midterm elections Nov. 7 that swept Democrats to power in both houses of Congress, was adamantly opposed to Bolton.

Critics have questioned Bolton’s brusque style and whether he could be an effective bureaucrat who could force reform at the U.N.

And with John Bolton goes our hope of some clarity and sanity at the U.N. While there was likely little he could do to change that institution he was a much needed voice of reason. The writing was on the wall but this is still a punch in the gut for conservatives and supporters of the greater war on terror.

Michelle Malkin: Very depressing news this Monday morning. We are losing a staunch, devoted defender of America’s interests at the U.N. Reacting to the news, Eleanor Clift chuckled on Fox News that Bush is just “recognizing reality.” If the White House thinks throwing in the towel and throwing Bolton overboard will appease the Dems or the U.N., it doesn’t know what reality is.

Hot Air: Bad things happen when you lose your majority.

The American Pundit: Damn it, Damn it, Damn it.

My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy: This, in a word, sucks. It’s not as if he were likely to be confirmed, but…dammit. Let’s just hope he’s replaced by someone equally tenacious in fighting for American interests at the cesspool of corruption and despotism that is the U.N.

Stop the ACLU: This is a great loss for the U.S. I’m sure the appeasers and criminals at the U.N. are celebrating.

Outside the Beltway: It’s a shame that the use of extraordinary tactics by the minority in the Senate kept him from getting confirmed to begin with. With the new Congress coming in, Bolton wouldn’t win an up-or-down vote, obviating any previous rationale for bypassing the rules.

Assorted Babble: Lord Help Us….

7.62mm Justice: I count this as a causality to Bipartisanship.

Texas Rainmaker: Of course, who can blame him for realizing nobody in Washington was willing to fight for him? Congress is going back in session and GOP representatives have thrown in the towel.

Macsmind: Whatever happens on the national security forefront from now on we will hold Democrats both morally and personally responsible for whatever perils happen to America.

Suitably Flip: This is one of those rare filibusters in which obstructionists get to feel good not only about shirking their advise and consent duties, but also about weakening the country’s diplomatic stance - not only by virtue of the inevitable perceived instability, but also because Bolton was unusually intolerant of UN malefaction and few candidates (even under a Republican majority) would be likely to measure up.

Sister Toldjah: He will be missed, not by the people who think we should play nice with evil, but by the people who believe evil should be called for what it is.

Blue Crab Boulevard: One of the bad precedents the Senate Democrats have set in these past few years is that of blocking appointments on a routine basis. They will come to regret making that tactic acceptable.

Wake Up America: An orginization so full of corruption had no room for a man with this type of integrity that was willing to stand up for the good and smack down the bad.

The Hotline has the President’s statement in full. The best bit:

I am deeply disappointed that a handful of United States Senators prevented Ambassador Bolton from receiving the up or down vote he deserved in the Senate. They chose to obstruct his confirmation, even though he enjoys majority support in the Senate, and even though their tactics will disrupt our diplomatic work at a sensitive and important time. This stubborn obstructionism ill serves our country, and discourages men and women of talent from serving their Nation.

I’ve collected some typical reactions from the Left in a new post.

    An American Loss: Bolton Resigns…

According to Fox Bolton has resigned and the President has accepted his resignation. As much as the man has done, it isn’t a huge surprise that the Democrats would block the one honest man at the UN that actually had some integrity and was not anti-s….
