It sounds like we’re hours, not days, away from the execution:
A senior official in Washington tells ABC News that Hussein will be transferred to Iraqi custody by the end of today.
The actual date for the execution is still a closely guarded secret, and will be decided on solely by Iraqis, the official says.
Prime Minister Nouri Kamel al-Maliki was quoted on Iraqi television this morning, saying there should be no delay in implementing the sentence, but he said nothing about the timing.
I can’t imagine that the Iraqis will hold him any longer than necessary. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them take custody and walk him directly to his execution.
Update:
CNN reports that sources are indicating that the execution is imminent:
Saddam Hussein could be hanged as early as Saturday, one of the former Iraqi dictator’s lawyers told CNN on Friday.
“Different sources” said the death sentence would be carried out Saturday morning, defense attorney Najib al-Nuaimi said from Doha, Qatar.
“I think the Americans will accompany him onto the execution stage and I think they will have a pre-recorded film that will be released [Saturday] evening if they carry out the sentence in the day,” he said.
