In his defense it must be noted that John Edwards was strung out, desperate, and had gone almost two weeks without a $400 haircut. He really needed the money:
John Edwards, who yesterday demanded Democratic candidates return any campaign donations from Rupert Murdoch and News Corp., himself earned at least $800,000 for a book published by one of the media mogul’s companies.
The Edwards campaign said the multimillionaire trial lawyer would not return the hefty payout from Murdoch for the book titled “Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives.”
The campaign didn’t respond to a question from The Post about whether it was hypocritical for Edwards to take money from News Corp. while calling for other candidates not to.
In addition to a $500,000 advance from HarperCollins, which is owned by News Corp., Edwards also was cut a check for $300,000 for expenses.
I can almost hear him now. “I didn’t want to take this money but I bit the bullet so that I could redistribute it to the people who need it most - that and I have an ungodly carbon footprint to offset.” Of course, this wouldn’t have really mattered if Edwards himself hadn’t made such a big deal about it:
Former senator John Edwards, who has been throwing punches at Rupert Murdoch and his Fox News Channel, demanded yesterday that the other Democratic presidential candidates return contributions from Murdoch’s media conglomerate.
“John Edwards will never ask Rupert Murdoch for money — he won’t accept his money,” said a statement e-mailed to supporters.
Opps!
