Tancredo is naive in the extreme unless his only motivation is generating negative press coverage. If that’s his only goal then we’re clearly witnessing pure genius:
“If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina,” Tancredo said. “That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do. If I am wrong, fine, tell me, and I would be happy to do something else. But you had better find a deterrent, or you will find an attack.”
Tom Casey, a deputy spokesman for the State Department, told CNN’s Elise Labott that the congressman’s comments were “reprehensible” and “absolutely crazy.” Tancredo was widely criticized in 2005 for making a similar suggestion.
I’m no Tancredo fan but I am amused by anyone who can piss off CAIR:
A Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group responded in anger Thursday, calling Tancredo’s statement “unworthy of anyone seeking public office in the United States.”
“Perhaps it’s evidence of a long-shot candidate grasping at straws and trying to create some kind of a controversy that might appeal to a niche audience of anti-Muslim bigots,” said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. . .
Timothy Noah’s take is perfect:
Wouldn’t you know it. The Weekly World News announces that it will cease publication (it will retain its presence on the Web), and within a week there surfaces irrefutable evidence that space aliens ate Tom Tancredo’s brain.
Anyway he’s done this before. Nobody pays much attention. You get the feeling that even CAIR is getting slightly bored with him.
